A story about children growing up and leaving the nest i can see why ozu is so influential, but i can’t help but feel like yang does it better (e.g. yi yi) because of how the characters have interiority and the dialogue is more interestingi think that ultimately this film, whether intentionally or not, is about the patriarchy which makes for an interesting watching experience, at least on the conceptual level i liked the cinematography but i personally could not stand how dialogue starts and ends within the same shot which could’ve just been a technical thing but it felt very noticeable overall i feel like this just didn’t connect much with me but i do respect it for what it is

A really good entry into the rom-com canon bc of how it is about romantic and platonic love in a way that kind of mirrors each other narrativelyhas a lot of say on masculinity and male loneliness tbhaged fairly well for the most part and was progressive in some ways but still some iffy parts here and there

With this movie being focused on a realistic portrayal of just one military engagement the focus is not on the general war and interrogations on the justness of it (although civilian involvement is given a bit of thought while not the main focus) i think that the honest portrayal of war will resonate differently with everyone depending on their preconceptions it is gruesome and traumatic and messy but in a way that reads to me like it is not trying to glorify or fetishize it it was well produced with good cinematography and sound design and while not super artistic still had some good artistic choices with all that being said why this movie and why now? i think it is strange on garland and a24’s part to make and distribute this movie. maybe as a cautionary tale for war but it doesn’t seem as important as other stories in this moment

I think the casting was my main/only real gripe with this movie. i love song and her writing and while the dialogue didn’t always hit for me, i think that the underlying themes that she was trying to get across deeply resonated with me as they are the kinds of things i often think about as well. i think she takes a more pessimistic viewpoint on dating under capitalism but a more optimistic realism about love more generally. the relationship is not perfect and nor are the characters but that’s just real life!
