Living Slower and More Intentionally

Background

A little bit before 2022 ended, my friend Jenn and I were talking about how lives can change over the course of a year. She was talking about how she was borrowing a method from a friend of assigning a “word for the year,” and how it had been very useful for her. The idea is that there is a word that is your overarching focus for the course of the year. That isn’t to say that this is the only thing you’re working for or toward, but it is your main reach for the year, striving even to make only a small amount of progress on a larger concept. I am a strong believer that a little bit of progress is better than no progress, especially in the long-term. Oftentimes people resign themselves to wasting away in hopes of a big goal and big steps toward that goal, instead of making the small steps in the meantime.

My word this year is intentional. A lot of things snuck up on me last year, Christmas being one of the big things. Since being out of middle school, or maybe high school at the latest, I haven’t felt much of a holiday spirit. I mostly chalk that up to no longer being in spaces where I am surrounded by the holiday spirit, or at the very least, holiday decorations as soon as December starts. Throughout college and my post-college years so far, I have not yet been able to cultivate the holiday spirit within myself or the ones around me, but I hope to change that this year, and for the rest of my years. I know that others feel the same way that I do, so I at least want to be able to be that kind of holiday spirit in other people’s lives.

The other reason that I found myself at the word intentional for my word of the year was because of my interpersonal relationships. Intentionality was always so important to me in my romantic relationships, but that idea never made it over to my other types of relationships, for whatever reason. There are a lot of people in life that you will not see if you do not make the first move, and that’s fine, there isn’t any hard feelings behind that sentiment, I think that it is just a fact of life that some people are “reacher-out-ers” and some people are not. For me, I want to become more of a “reacher-out-er” and intentionally schedule time to catch up and see the people that I care about in my life. That means both family and friends, but especially family since I am no longer living at home and am no longer able to as easily tag along to family time that my mother or father schedule with my other relatives.

To me, being intentional means planning ahead, but also being present in the moment. It’s a mixture of being forward-thinking, mindful, and also taking things more slowly instead of rushing just for the sake of checking things off of a to-do list. I will not pretend that I have everything figured out with how to be more intentional in my life, but at least in an ironic way, I’m being intentional about being intentional.

My Plans

Here is a list of just a few of the ways I plan on being more intentional this year:

  1. Walk or Metro to get groceries
    • Get produce or bread from local farmers’ markets?
  2. Cook through the cookbooks I have collected
    • Cook a new recipe once a week?
  3. Walk to the library to pick up book holds
    • Read books before I buy them
  4. Catalog my books and allow friends to “check them out”
  5. Go into DC to buy books from independent bookstores
    • Buy secondhand when I can
    • Smell the books!
  6. Read more instead of using TikTok
  7. Volunteer after work
  8. Workout in the morning or after work before dinner
  9. Plan people’s gifts ahead of time
    • Find things on Pinterest and keep track of them on boards
    • Make more gifts by hand
  10. Decorate my room to make it a space of comfort

Potential Future Words of the Year

I know its a bit early in the year to be thinking of words for the next year, and I truly don’t know what I want to be doing next year, but for now I just leave this list of possible future words as a fun exercise in thought:

  • Savor
  • Connect
  • Inspire
  • Speak Up
